Children and young people services

We provide groups for children, young people, and their families with low vision and blindness to participate in social events, meet other young people with visual impairment, and build life skills. Our groups are run by two Cam Sight staff, who both hold professional diplomas in Visual Impairment Rehabilitation studies and are registered with MISE (Mobility and Independence Specialists in Education). We also have volunteers helping to play and read with the children. All involved hold up-to-date DBS checks and have undergone child protection training.

Pre-school group

We run fortnightly groups during term time for parents/carers and their children. Siblings and other cared for children are also welcome. Snacks are provided for all who attend.

The group is structured to be geared around each child’s individual needs. We regularly have craft, messy play, and singing. Alongside these activities, we work in lifelong skills training around mobility, kinaesthetic skills, using olfactory sense.

The Cambridge group is held every other Tuesday during term time from 10am – 12.00 noon at:

North Cambridge Children’s Centre
Campkin Road

Primary school group

Our monthly groups are open to all children with a visual impairment. We run two sessions per evening to cater for different ages and abilities.

The group gives the children a chance to meet their peers, share day to day experiences, and take part in a variety of activities including: crafts, table football, pool and air hockey. Pizza included!

Parents/carers are welcome to stay with their children or chat to each other in a separate area with a cup of tea/coffee. Children can also be left unaccompanied at this group.

The group is held monthly on Thursdays during term time from 5pm – 6.30pm and 6pm – 7.30pm. Location details below.

Secondary school group

These monthly groups are an opportunity for young people to meet up and chat. We have pool and air hockey etc. but we also encourage members to come up with their own suggestions. Previously these have included talks, junk modelling, and cookery. Pizza included!

No parents needed but you are welcome to wait with a cuppa!

The group is held monthly on Thursdays during term 6.30pm – 8.30pm

The primary school group and secondary school group meet at:

Brown’s Field Youth and Community Centre

Special Events

Throughout the year, we also organise special events for our children, young people, and their families. In the past, we have organised trips to Thorpe Park, attended audio-described pantomimes, and run cookery sessions. Details of any upcoming special events will be shared here, so watch this space!

Come along to a session!

If you would like to visit one of the groups, please contact Paula Bird by email or by telephone 01223 420033 Ext. 30.

“The groups are special as they give specialist support, emotional support, and information. We know our children are safe and looked after. It also gives us parents a chance to talk and share our experiences.” – Mum who attended the pre-school group
