Jim worked for 32 years in the NHS as a professional manager ending up as CEO of a health authority in north London. He took early retirement and pursued a second career as an elected councillor in local government. He also spent time doing voluntary work through the Rotary Club of Cambridge and the Cambridgeshire Rehabilitation Club for Blind and Partially Sighted People. When he was president of the latter he negotiated its merger with Cam Sight has been a Trustee ever since.
